Hindsight Bias & Sorcerer Mickey

By: Sheldon Metz, J.D.

- January 21, 2026

A family trip to Disney World unexpectedly highlighted a common behavioral finance pitfall: hindsight bias.

Using the surprising history of Fantasia as an example, this article explains how hindsight can distort investment decisions, create overconfidence, increase risk, and why disciplined strategy matters more than assumed predictability.

You see it everywhere. The S&P 500 index is often treated as a barometer for the entire stock market, its performance flashing across news tickers, financial reports, and the evening news. But how well do investors truly understand what they’re buying when they invest their money into an S&P 500 index fund?

Scary Stories From the World of Estate Planning: Why So Serious? The Risks of an Outdated Estate Plan

This might be a controversial take, but Batman is hands-down my favorite superhero. As you can see in the picture to the left, when I was 8 years old, I was Batman for Halloween. Pretty epic costume.

So you can imagine my excitement in 2008 when a much older, but no less nerdy, Sheldon saw the midnight premier of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight starring Heath Ledger as the Joker.

Sadly, Ledger unexpectedly passed away in January 2008. At the time of Ledger’s passing, his will did not leave any provisions for his daughter Matilda. As you might suspect, fighting amongst family members began. How could this have been avoided?

Scary Stories From the World of Estate Planning: The Prince Who Left No Plan

“Dearly beloved…we are gathered here today to get through this thing called ‘life’…electric word, life, it means forever…and that’s a mighty long time…"

If you didn’t recognize those lyrics (and honestly…you should have) those are the iconic opening words to the song “Let’s Go Crazy” by Minnesota rock and roll legend, Prince. Although a musical genius in his own right, Prince was wrong about average human life expectancy.

Sadly, life does not last “forever” and that is why it is crucial to have an estate plan in place to ensure your assets are passed on according to your wishes when the “Grim Reaper come knocking on your door.” (I wish I could tell you that’s the last Prince lyric you’ll read in this article, but it will not be.)

Unfortunately, Prince might have spent a little too much time in the recording studio with his band mates in The Revolution because he completely forgot to create and execute an estate plan.

As you move into your 60s, it is natural to think about the risk of needing long-term care. No one wants to think about a stroke, a fall or early onset dementia affecting us or the ones we love. But coming up with a plan for the potential impact of an event should be your first goal.

Six Important Questions if you are Asked to be an Executor

By: Sheldon Metz, J.D.

- July 2024

We routinely advise our clients to review and update, if necessary, their Last Will and Testament and other estate planning documents. One of the important decisions they need to make is whom to ask to be the personal representative or executor in their will.
